Staying Positive (Blogging)

Blogging can be an amazing hobby and also the best career ever. You are constantly showcasing your life and all it has to offer, You share your likes, your dislikes, your aspirations and dreams there for the whole world to see through their little phone screens or laptops. You create this world you can call your own. I have always said and will continue to say that I started this blog as a creative outlet from the harsh realities we live in. My life may be a mess and unorganized but here, I am able to make everything perfect and share my most inner thoughts with you all.

Sounds perfect, huh? Well, as much as I love blogging; it hasn’t always been easy. Blogging has become one of the most up and coming careers over the past couple of years that it is becoming very competitive. Everyone wants to be recognized for their passion and their dedication to it. Blogging is no longer a hobby when some people are making more than 500k per year. Everyone wants a piece of that. So making a career out of blogging has become very difficult and can be very daunting in the early stages. You are putting your heart in soul into something and you are seeing no results.

So, I’m going to go over little things that have helped me along the way when i’ve felt hopeless towards blogging and questioning if i could continue or not.

Remember Why You Started.

If you are anything like me, you didn’t start your blog in hopes that you’d make millions one day. You started because their was a certain hobby you loved. You wanted a place to share this love online with hopes that you would connect with others who feel the same way as you do. You started your blog for fun. I feel like a lot of bloggers eventually look at blogging as only their career choice and become obsessed with putting out the newest content and forget along the lines that it should still be enjoyable. I know there were times when I haven’t posted in a couple days and I start having a mini panic and start thinking: “Oh my gosh, I am going to lose followers! Brands are going to see me as inconsistent” and I rush to put a shoot together and the whole time I am rushing around, not enjoying the new cities I am visiting simply to post as soon as possible. Blogging shouldn’t be like that and when it does, you need to step back and remember: You started this because you love what you do and it doing that makes me happy.

Connect with fellow bloggers.

There are strength in numbers. I have come to learn that creating an audience is all about how you connect with other creators. Posting day after day about yourself without supporting other bloggers and reaching out to them to let them know you enjoy their content is very lonely. The moment I started searching other bloggers similar to my fashion sense and messaging them to let them know that their style is inspiring to me really made me enter a new space in the blogging community. You become friends with people that are across the world from you but you all exchange comments and support daily. You create an audience and what’s better than an audience who you could also call your friends. Blogging lets you meet people you would have never met if you hadn’t started your blog.

Networking, Networking, Networking.

I am an extremely shy human. Meeting new people terrifies me. Being pushed out of my comfort zone has always been bittersweet to me because I know I am only hurting myself by not putting myself out their but at the same time, I like my little protective shield I always hold up. If you’re like me and want to have successful career in blogging, that shield needs to be tossed to the side immediately. Blogging is all about networking. Whether that be through fellow creators like I previously mentioned or with brands and designers. Don’t expect opportunity to come knocking at your door. As cheesy as it sounds, you have to go out and find it. For the first year of blogging I never reached out to brands and expected them to find me. But when you don’t have a substantial amount of followers to talk for you, you need to show these brands what you have to offer and why they would benefit from it. Create a media kit, calculate your blog & instagram statistics and send them photo examples. Explain to them how and why your readers would love their brand. Sell yourself and your blog.

Take a breather.

Blogging can be very stressful and will drain you at sometimes. Constantly trying to share your life and document moments you experience all while living your other life away from blogging is a lot to balance. I always put too much on my plate and I assume I can take on any project that is thrown at me regardless if I already have 10 other projects going on. I love keeping busy but there are times when everything gets too much. When this happens I start dreading my blog and the commitment i’ve made to it and want to curl up in a little ball and hide away. This is the moment when I need to step back and rewind. Whether that be for a day or even a week away from blogging. Feeling under control and recharging is the best thing for your content. You will come back more inspired and more driven to put out the very best content.

Tips to get your blog on the map.

Be Yourself: One of the biggest struggles. Getting your blog the recognition it deserves. Thousands of blogs and Instagrams are being made a minute so what is going to separate yours from theirs? Individuality. Throw yourself 100% into your blog and be unapologetically yourself. I am sure you have all heard this quote over and over again, “Be yourself because no one else can” and yes, it is overused but that doesn’t mean there isn’t truth behind it.

Everyone loves the show Friends, it is a classic and the show I always turn to when I’m feeling a little down. Now, would you tune into another show that is called, “Pals” and was almost the exact same plot & characters but with just a little changes here and there so it wasn’t a total rip off? No, you wouldn’t. So don’t be a knock off of someone else. No one will continue to support you if every time they see your page they are reminded of someone else.

You have so much to offer and so many thoughts that have’t been said already so don’t worry about what others will find entertaining or stylish or relevant. Share what you love and do it in your own unique and awesome way.

Hashtags: These babies are life saviors for smaller accounts. When you add a hashtag to your post you  automatically show up under that tag for millions to see. On instagram, I have noticed if you use more than 10 your post may be labeled as spam and not shown up on the explore page. So I make sure to use the best hashtags in the blogging community to get noticed. (Ex: #fashionblogger #fashion #ootd #wiwt)

I have gained substantial followers and likes his way so it is definitely a great first step.

Aesthetically pleasing themes: Any successful blogger will repeat this over and over again. Have a cohesive them. Let everything flow and be eye pleasing. Not only will followers gawk over your newly cohesive theme, brands will too. It spent me 2 years to finally get down the perfect filter for my instagram and now that I have, I have noticed all the difference! So download VSCO, Snapseed, and Lightroom. Use the same filter for every photo and your page will look amazing.

E-Mail Brands: Don’t wait for them to come to you. Figure out the brand you wish to work with and find their e-mail or even better, there PR email. Come up with an amazing e-mail explaining why you blog would fit their brand perfectly and make sure to explain that, “My followers will love ext.!” This shows the brand that they will gain something from collaborating with you. You are a type of advertising for these companies so sell yourself!!

Work hard and work smart. Showcase your talent and creativity to express who you really are and have fun. Don’t get caught up in the number of followers and how many likes your photo receives. Blogging is a tough community but is filled with wondrous possibilities! You got this!
